Welcome to Salt Lake City |
Salt Lake City is also home to a few major shopping centers. Trolley Square is an indoor and outdoor mall with many independent art boutiques, restaurants, and national retailers. The buildings housing the shops are renovated trolley barns with cobblestone streets. The Gateway District is the city’s newest major centre and has many national restaurants, clothing retailers, a movie theater, the Clark Planetarium, a music venue called The Depot, and a 2002 Olympic Park. There are two major malls across from each other on Main Street: the ZCMI Center Mall and Crossroads Mall. Both are currently undergoing renovation, where they will be modernized and connected by a skyway. Sugar House is known as a posh neighborhood with its small town main street shopping area and numerous old parks. Sugar House Park is the second largest park in the city, and is host to frequent outdoor events and the Fourth of July fireworks in the city. (Information provided by Wikipedia .)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 19, 2009
Contact: Marla Kennedy Office: 801-535-7177 Cell: 801-541-3941
Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker’s Statement on Funding Proposal for New Libraries
After careful consideration and consultation with the City Council, I have chosen not to block the Council’s funding proposal for two additional libraries in Salt Lake City.
Throughout my career as a public official I have consistently supported increased funding to build and operate additional libraries in Salt Lake City. I continue to do so as Mayor. I applaud Council members’ commitment to the Salt Lake City Library system, and I share their passion for developing additional branches in our neighborhoods. Libraries are fundamentally important to the quality of life in our city and provide a center for discovery, learning and ideas. The Glendale and West Capitol Hill neighborhoods, in particular, are in critical need of the resources that only a library can provide.
While I support the addition of two new libraries to the City’s library system, my concerns remain about the process through which funding for the new branches was approved.
I am specifically concerned the proposal was not developed as part of the overall city budget process, which began with the administration in January and was presented to the Council in May. As Mayor I am obligated to consider the impacts |

Salt Lake City (March 24, 2009) -- The Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City (RDA) is requesting submissions of qualifications from developers for property in the Central Business District of Salt Lake City. As part of a larger “Arts and Cultural District” concept, the RDA is focusing on enhancing the arts and cultural amenities in the Central Business District Project Area by encouraging development of projects that further the goal of creating a lively, culturally rich and pedestrian-friendly downtown. The proposed development is located on Downtown’s Block 70, the area between 100 and 200 South and Main and State Streets. The RDA has an Exclusive Negotiation Agreement for the purchase of certain parcels of land on the block which are currently owned by Property Reserve Inc and Suburban Land Reserve. The RDA is requesting information from qualified developers to work in cooperation with the Agency and Salt Lake City Corporation to acquire the parcels and design and construct a 2,500-seat theater and other commercial, residential, or mixed-use buildings. |
